Activity no. 4: Glogster

This is my favourite activity of all because you can get beautiful productions from this website: Glogster

I think this activity can be aimed at students of all ages and levels of english, that is what I like the most about it.

For this activity you will have to create a poster about your last holidays. These are the steps to follow:

1) Gather a number of pictures, videos, memories, favourite songs and audio about your holidays. You can use songs you feel identified with, pictures from the places you have been to, phrases that summarise your experiences and any other kind of media you would like to include in your poster.

2) Once you have the material you are going to work with, create an account in Glogster.

3) Under you account name, you will find the option "Create a Glog", go there!

4) Now, you can leave it all to your creativity. You will see a white poster ready to be filled with your material and graphics, wallpapers and other things Glogster offer you. On you left, you will find the menu. There, you can choose what to add to your Glog. You can upload you material from this menu and choose graphics and images already included in Glogster.

5) When you are done, click on "Save or Publish" and give it a name. You can include tags and assign it a category. You also have the option to make it public or private.

6) Prepare a text document with your opinion about working with this website and write the link to your Glog. Don't forget to include your personal information. Once the document is ready, send it by e-mail to your teacher.

Activity No. 3: ESL Video

Regards levels of english and ages, this activity is similar to the one with Listen and Write, since the web tool might not be that easy to use for young students. Still, the linguist level can vary according to the video students choose.

The aim of this activity is for you to create a set of activities or questions about a video. Then, you will share the link to you video with the rest of your classmates for them to practice comprehension.

This web tool is for you to create activities related to a video, so, first of all, you will have to find a useful video to work with. Once you have chosen a video, do the following:

1) Create an account on http://eslvideo.com and go to the "Create Quiz" section. The good thing about this web site is that they explain every step you must follow to create the quiz. You will notice you will have to complete a form with some information about the video. At the bottom of the page you will find the "Next" button to go on.

2) In this page you will see the video and below ti, a few links. These links are for you to edit any of the information you have included and to add questions and transcripts to the activity. That's mainly what you have to do!

3) Go to "My Account" and you will be able to view your work.

4) For evaluation, send your teacher a text document with the pros and cons of working with this web tool. Include you personal information and the link to you ESL video activity. To evaluate your classmates, you can simply make a comment on their ESL web page.

Check Sample No. 2: ESL video.com to see what a finished activity looks like.

Activity No. 2: Voki

This activity is aimed to students from 8 years old ahead. The website is pretty clear and easy to use. And, since the linguistic content of the activity is at a begginers level, all students of english can work with this.

The idea of this activity is to create an Avatar in Voki (it can be a human, an animal or even a monster, you choose) introducing itself with your own information. For that you will need to:

1) Write your own introduction. Consider the following points: name, age, nationality, what you like, a special greeting. Show it to your teacher for any possible correction or suggestion.

2) Go to Voki.com and create an account. Check your e-mail account for the confirmation e-mail.

3) Choose the option "create" on the web site. You will see a frame with a character inside. You can change this character with the options its right. You can change things such as the whole body (dog, girl, flower, etc.), the background, the colours of each detail and the frame (called "players").

4) Once you have selected all the characteristics, you can now give you character a voice. For this, you have different options (I recommend option one) but we are not considering the one in which you can call by phone because it is too much trouble.
Option one: Click the icon that looks like a key. Now, type what you want your Avatar to say (your introduction). Below the text box, you can choose the accent your Avatar will have and the voice (you will see these are people with names and different nationalities).
Option two: Choose the microphone icon. You can record yourself with this option. It is very simple: press record and say what you want the Avatar to say. You will have 60 seconds of audio.
Option trhee: If you click the file icon, you will be able to upload an audio file. As simple as uploading any other file in any other site.

5) Now your Avatar is ready to be published! Once you do so, you can embed it in your personal website or simple keep it in your Voki account.

6) Evaluation: In a text document, write a few lines with the pros and cons of this activity. Include the link to you Avatar and send it by e-mail to your teacher.

Activity No. 1: Listen and Write.

The activity is aimed to students with a pre-intermediate level of english. Since the web tool is not that difficult to use, the activity can be aimed at teenagers as well as adults, but not younger children because it would be difficult for them to prepare the audio.

The objective of this task is to create a listening activity.

Students will work in pairs following these steps:

1) Write down a diolgue (about 10 lines) about future plans for the holidays (including will, present continuous, present simple and going to).

2) Once the dialogue is finished and corrected by the teacher, record yourselves reading the dialogue.

3) Now you are ready to work on www.listen-and-write.com. You will first need to create an account in the "Sign up" section. Once you have a user name and password, go to "Submit a new audio". There you will find three options, in your case, choose option one (uploading the audio from your computer). Besides uploading the audio, you can give it a title, add some tags and complete with other information. After this, you will have to add the transcription of the audio (bare in mind the chunks will be considered separated by full stops). Next, you will have to track the audio and assign the corresponding piece of text to each track. Once you have finished this, your listening will be ready!

4) Just to make sure everything went O.K., go to the "My audios" section and select your dialogue. You will find three different kinds of activities. Choose one of them to check that your work is fine.

5) Now that you have your Dictation ready, you can exchange it with another pair of students. The idea is that they do the corresponding activity to your Listening and you do theirs.

6) Evaluate your work and that of your classmates'. On a text document, state what was difficult and what was not for you and your peer. Then, inlcude some points you found interesting or important about your classmates' work on listen-and-write.com and, if there is, what you would change about it. Then, print it and hand it in to your teacher. Inlcude the link to your Dictation and the one corresponding to your classmates' in the text document along with your personal information.

If you follow this link you will find a finished example of a Listen and Write Dication: Sample No. 6: Listen and Write.

Sample No. 7: Glogster

I particularly enjoyed Glogster.com very much. A Glog is a sort of multimedia online poster. There you can include images provided by Glogster as much as your own, music, videos and more. Results can be lovely, funny, interesting, for educational purposes or just for fun.

I created a Glog inspired in a song a really like. You can read the lyrics and listen to it in the Glog:

Sample No. 6: Listen and Write

Listen and Write is a very interesting website. I found it a bit difficult to get used to, but once you understand how to manipulate the audio, it is very simple to get your audio ready for the activities. Once you have the audio and the transcription edited, you can choose between a couple of activities to do with the audio.

Follow this link to an example of my own:

Sample No. 5: Proffesor Garfield Comics Lab

Comic Lab is a website to make a short comic using characters from the cartoon "Garfield". It is very easy to use it and you can find a variety of images for each character, a number of backgruonds and different kinds of speech bubles.

Once you finish your work, you can save it in different format. It will look like this:
